Homeopathy Can Bring Desired Relief
by Joy Pacitto
Digestive complaints such as gas, abdominal bloating, constipation, cramping and diarrhea can make one’s life miserable. Sufferers can also experience excess worry about their symptoms and inconvenience. This cluster of symptoms is often referred to as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). When other diagnoses have been ruled out, many people “just live with it”.
According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 20 percent of the population, mostly women, experience IBS symptoms. The causes vary from disordered bowel motility (bowels move too fast or too slow), food intolerances, fermentation in the gut following medications, changes in diet or the after effects of a stomach bug.
The bowel may also reflect emotional states such as unresolved anger or anxiety. Some people develop IBS symptoms along with strong, persistent stress. For example, a person may believe it is necessary to ambitiously overwork to be valued or productive (workaholic types). They are highly anxious but strive not to show it. Others may develop symptoms when they are grieving from a loss or because they are stuck in a state of emotional turmoil.
To address these concerns, a person may use laxatives or fiber supplements to address the constipation or diarrhea. Another choice is to take digestive enzymes to help the gas and bloating. Some folks add herbal formulas to help the anxiety. While these solutions may provide welcomed relief, they address only one symptom at a time. Homeopathy, on the other hand, addresses not only the bowel symptoms but the mental and emotional symptoms that present at the same time, making homeopathic care a valuable and unique therapy.
Each person has a special variety of symptoms that are unlike those of anyone else’s.
For example, when a client presents with abdominal cramping the homeopath will want to know ‘how’ they experience cramping. Is the cramping worse on the right or left side? It is better during the day or at night? What makes the cramping feel better—sitting still, sitting bended forward, moving about or a hot shower? What triggers the cramping—eating, emotions, fatigue? What is the mental state when the cramping is at its worse— anger, crying, looking for consolation or suffering quietly alone?
How a person answers these questions individualizes the picture for the homeopath. This enables the homeopath to select the proper remedy to relieve symptoms on all levels.
Homeopathic philosophy refers to this approach as viewing ‘the totality of symptoms’.
It is easy to see that gut complaints can be part of a larger picture. In working with a classical homeopath, the totality of symptoms is always highly valued. This means the entire person, not just the IBS symptoms, are addressed as the person improves and achieves the good health they deserve.
