Mudra literally means gesture, or seal. In yoga, mudras are hand gestures used in conjunction with pranayama (yogic breathing exercises), and are generally done while seated in meditative poses like lotus pose.

According to the science of mudra, which is a part of yoga, the physical body is made up of five elements—air, water, fire, Earth and sky (ether)—and everything in the universe is made of all these elements. Our fingers have the characteristics of these elements and each of these five elements serves a specific and important function within the body. Health is having all these five elements in balance; disease is due to an imbalance in the body caused by lack or excess of any of the five elements.

By pressing together, curling, touching or pointing different fingers or parts of the hands in different ways, individuals can bring back the balance in the elements and ultimately heal the body from disease. Each finger has a subtle energy circuit and when we perform a mudra, the energy that is being emitted out of our fingertips is arrested and redirected to certain part of the brain centers from where the proper breathing directs it to the parts of the body as per the mudra. It directs energy flow and connects parts of the body to the brain as life force energy flows through the body. Certain yoga mudras are believed to instigate particular energy flows and stimulate different emotions, feelings and spiritual reactions in the body.

Mudras for joint pains

1) Sandhi Mudra (Joint Mudra): “Sandhi means joint” which is helpful to relieve joint pain. This mudra is formed differently by each hand.

How to do this mudra?

Right hand - join the tip of the thumb and tip of the ring finger together. (Prthvi Mudra)

Left hand - join the tip of the thumb and tip of the middle finger together.(Akash Mudra)

You can do it for 15 minutes twice a day. People suffering from chronic joints pain should do it for 30 minutes thrice a day for better results.

Effects:

Space is balanced between the cartilege and the joint muscles.

Benefits:

This mudra helps in balancing energy in the joints and heals the wearied out ligaments/tendons/muscles at and around the joints. Joint mudra reduces excess vata and dryness in the joints. Pain experienced while climbing down after a long hike is pacified.

A large population is involved in desk jobs and spends a large part of their day sitting in front of computer screens. This leads to stiffness and soreness in elbows, wrist, fingers and knees. Practicing this mudra resolves tiredness in the elbows after the long hours of work on a computer.

This mudra helps relieve pain and facilitates movements in the hip joints and knee joints due to arthritis.

For people suffering from chronic pain in the joints, this mudra help resolve the pain by persistent effort.

2) Pran Mudra: This is done after almost all mudras to compliment the first’s action.

This Mudra redirects our pran energy where it’s really needed, or to the weaker parts in body.

How to do this?

Touch the tips of ring and little fingers to the tip of the thumbs. Done with both the hands at the same time for five minutes.
