Dear Members,
We hope that you, your family and your neighbors had a safe and enjoyable summer. We are anxious to get back to our regular meetings and begin by announcing that:
The Fall Meeting of the Fruit Hill Neighborhood Association will be held on Tuesday September 20, at 7:30 pm. at St. Mary’s Home for Children, 420 Fruit Hill Avenue, North Providence, RI 02911. (Please go to the Gemma Room, with an entrance on Adelaide Avenue).
In addition to our regular business agenda we have special guest speaker lined up for this meeting. Ms. Cathy Bert from Bert Galleries of Providence will give a presentation on historic artists from the Fruit Hill area. After the meeting Councilman Dino Autiello will be available for questions and comments from the members.
We are pleased to announce that Lt. Michael Paiva from the North Providence Police Department will serve as the liaison between the Association and the NPPD. He will be attending our November meeting. We welcome him to our group.
And don’t forget the Farmers' Market! It takes place on Fridays from 3:30-6:00 pm from August 20-October 14. This year it takes place in the RIC parking lot Y, which is the new parking lot directly on Fruit Hill Avenue.
Please mark Saturday September 17, 2011 on your calendar. Rhode Island College is sponsoring a Green-Up – Clean Up Day. Several of us participated in last year’s clean-up targeting Fruit Hill Avenue. There will also be a commercial shredder and drop-off point for electronic waste available in Parking Lot A (near the Mt Pleasant Avenue entrance). Registration begins at 8:30 am in the Donovan Dining Center and a continental breakfast will be provided. The rain date is scheduled for Saturday September 24, 2011. We are sad to announce the passing of Roland Mergener. Roland was a key member of the team that rejuninated the Fruit Hill Neighborhood Association after a long dormant state. Roland served as the president of the FHNA twice and maintained a presence on the board. We will miss Roland and his contributions.
MERGENER, ROLAND B., 77, of Oak Grove Blvd., passed away Monday, July 4, 2011 at RI Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary M. (Donnelly) Mergener. Born in Evanston, IL, a son of the late Henry and Regina (Cahill) Mergener. He was a resident of North Providence since 1969. Mr. Mergener was a college educator at RI College for 25 years before retiring. He is survived by two sons, Stephen M. Mergener and his wife Virginia of San Diego, CA and Paul R. Mergener and his wife Tara of Alexandria, VA; two daughters, Theresa M. Holt of North Providence and Sharon A.M. Mitchell and her husband Jeffrey of Erie, PA and six grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Philip and Clifford Mergener.
